KP's Story
KP was found begging for food at a Kroger's Parking lot, hence the name KP, in Kentucky in June 1993.  A couple stopped to pick up groceries on their way to their weekend get-away.  KP was sitting outside of the store begging for food.  When they ask the store about the dog they said he had been around for a few weeks.  Customers would buy food and feed him so he never left. They then bought some hotdogs and fed a few to him on their way to their car.  Not being able to get KP out of their mind, the couple stopped at the same Kroger's on their way back home and there he was.  So they took him home with them in hope's of finding someone who would want him.  I found out about KP through my neighbor who did in-house child care.  But before I could call about him they had already given him to the local Labrador Retriever Rescue.   I always wanted a German Shepard but heard so much about KP I decided to take a look.   I called and the rest is history.

My friend and neighbor drove me to the Lab Rescue.  He was a mess...brown matted hair, his undercoat was all tangled...god he needed a brushing and bad.  The Lab Rescue operator, Marty Monk, brought KP out.  The first thing he did was take a dump.  Marty said he was a great dog.  Never soiled his run and was very gentle and sweet.  When I asked what his name was she told me KP, for Kroger's parking lot, the place he was found.  I asked if I could adopt him and was immediately subjected to interrogation...do you live in a house or apartment? Is your yard fenced in?  Will he be allowed in the house?  blah blah blah...In the end she agreed to let me adopt him and I gave her a $100 donation to help with the Lab Rescue.

KP's first week was pure hell.  He peed at will in the house and especially like going to the basement to do it.  After each incident he spent time in the basement bathroom.  He soon learned and is now 100% trustworthy.

My old man began showing his age...14...pretty good life.  During the week I noticed KP having some standing and walking issues.  Friday he kept falling and was very unstable on his legs so I took him into the vet on Saturday.  The vet basically said that his head, heart and vascular system is fine but he developed a neurological problem that will progress.  The only issue is his safety especially around steps and 3 other very active dogs.  Since he wasn't in pain I took him home over the weekend and made an appointment for Monday 3 pm to put him down.  The weekend was hell.  He had 2 bad nights to a point that I was going to take him to the CARE Center Sunday night.  In the end I waited until Monday and moved it up to 11:30 am.  I carried him in even though he hates it, but, he simply couldn't walk anymore.  For a dog who had a problem laying down he laid right down with me and waited for the vet.  He knew it was time and so did I.  It was over in seconds.  My vet kept him until Pines Pet Cemetery could pick him up for cremation the next day.  I had his ashes by Wednesday.
